The 33rd Fighter Wing “Nomads” were created from the 33rd Pursuit Group (1941) which had participated in the defense of the Atlantic Coast immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Pursuit Group became the Fighter Group in 1942 and saw action during Operation Torch in North Africa where they flew various missions, often with other well-known units like the Tuskegee Airmen and the Lafayette Escadrille. Before being activated at Eglin AFB in 1965, the Nomads had been activated and inactivated many times post-World War II. From Eglin, several of the Nomads’ F-4 Phantom II squadrons were sent to Southeast Asia in support of the Vietnam War and one of those squads, the 58th Fighter Squadron, was the first to shoot down a MiG. The wing phased out F-4s and by 1979 had adopted the F-15 Eagle. The Eagles were flown into Grenada as a part of Operation Urgent Fury (1983) and Panama with Operation Just Cause (1989). F-15s were also in support of Operation Desert Shield (1990) and, during Desert Storm in 1991, accrued the most kills of any allied unit worldwide. In the years leading up to September 2001, the Nomads participated in many more U.S. operations and then were called on to patrol the skies in Operation Noble Eagle directly after the attacks of 9/11. They also flew in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. Just a few years later, in 2009, their F-15s were phased out once again and the wing welcomed F-35s in 2011 and began training right away.
